Get involved and Make a Difference...

Make a Difference...Get Involved...

The Kid Who Crowd-funded His College Education — In 1987

A year beforeTim Berners-Lee, the English computer scientist, developed the "World Wide Web"...

Mike Hayes when to a reporter and asked to write a an article...and Bob Greene, a nationally syndicated writer at Chicago Tribune did just that... To their surprise...the response was GREAT...and Mike Hayes became known as the "Pennyman"...and funded his college education...

Indeed... Would you give a penny to help a deserving stranger attend college?
A very simple question...a kid attending college posed to everyone... A very simple challenge...and because people are GOOD in essence... They responded positively to Mike Hayes...

Back in 1987, though, 18-year-old University of Illinois freshman Mike Hayes could think of but one option to his own college-financing quandary, and it was a long shot.
The teenager had hit upon the idea of crowdfunding. He just needed to reach 2.8 million people.

Mike Hayes was innovative...The "Pennyman" got what he asked for...He financed his education with the pennies...of course, some donated more than a penny.... But after the college diploma he did not follow up his brilliant initiative.... He graduated with a diploma in food sciences...but he became just another mediocre graduate...pursuing "smaller" things in and abandoned his innovative vision...
He became just another graduate...
Mike Hayes reminded me of all those who get excited in the very last minute and want to do well in their work or test or exam...

Many people are last minute procrastinators... They leave all to the last minute...and then they ask all kinds of questions to catch up... I had many students who thought few more questions at the very last minute will do the trick...
It annoyed me... I refused to answer last minute questions and tried to teach them to relax the last few minutes... being who they are...they got annoyed and then told others that "he does not want to help..."
Thinking this last few days I found out a new word for these people-students...

And finally on a Sunday...

An ultra-marathoner trying to "run" from Florida to Bermuda in a human-powered inflatable bubble was rescued Saturday morning after he signaled for help, the Coast Guard said.
Reza Baluchi, has set a goal of running across more than 190 recognized nations to encourage world peace.

The guys intentions are very good...Running for world peace is a commendable venture...But I think the means...looking at what he has...is just a stunt...
Geeting involved should not be a stunt...
Getting involved should be ... to make a difference and to share ...

Scuffles erupted between pro-democracy activists occupying central parts of Hong Kong and riot police, as the protests entered their second week.
Thousands of people held a rally overnight, defying the Beijing-backed authorities, although by Sunday morning many of the protesters had gone home.
